Creative Project for Essential Blue
For: The Institute Of Contemporary And Emerging Worship Studies, St.Stephen’sUniversity, Essentials Blues Online Worship Theology Course with Dan Wilt
Finally got here! This is my final project for the Essential Blue worship theology course. I’m glad Dan said ‘rough’ mp3! It would have taken me weeks to smooth it out.
Anyway I have written a song based on the trinity inspired by the section on prayer in Simply Christian by N T Wright (p144) where Wright talks about the eastern orthodox ‘Jesus Prayer’.
This simple prayer really stuck home and I felt called to put the simple words to music.
I have tried to capture a simple Celtic feel, as this is my heritage and blend it with this ancient eastern orthodox tradition thus evoking a sense of community as we link old with new, east with west.
This project is not complete, this idea deserves more than two weeks of rushed thought. So here is my draft version, I hope you like it.
The mp3 and chord chart can be found at www.brokenwalls.co.uk
Bless you all, Rob.

Rob,
I enjoyed your song. With the repeating lines of the verses, it became, for me, a meditation prayer song where even though I was singing the same lines, my spirit was generating other lines of praise at the same time. Very peaceful. I use the short-cut capo a good bit in worship as it gives me those ringing open strings celtic sound that make things rich and full especially when I am the only instrument. Is that what you used?
I also enjoy writing songs that sing to our Trinitarian God. It might be cool to pick up an old book of such prayers and put them to music. At some point, people might have read such prayers together, creating community. One of Dan’s videos talked about how singing together creates community. Adding some music would modernize some of the old prayers that are really so rich and let us experience them anew.
Very nice, Rob. As always I appreciate how you create word pictures and phrases that say and contain much more than just the words. They seem to be just a container for what your spirit is singing and saying.
Keep me in the loop if you work on this more. I’d like to hear it. This is a perfect song for our healing prayer worship so if it is ok, I’d like to use it.
Blessings,
Mark
Rob,
The celtic feel really fits well with the Jesus Prayer. Great job.
